I use Windows Defender, lavalys ad-aware and CCleaner on all my computers and peoples that I work on.
If you have Windows XP, go to microsoft.com and download Windows Defender. It's free and effective.

If you want more protection, get Norton antivirus, MacAfee, or any security software by Trend Micro.

i use ad aware for my spyware protection its free and very user friendly then for my anti virus i use AVG its also free and really good, plus you can check out CNET for free firewall protection, most of these free versions do about as good as the ones you purchase for about 50 bucks....once a week i run the spyware, takes about 5 mins, then i run a full system scan from AVG and then i use windows already installed program to do a disk clean up which removes temp downloads from surfing the web which slow down the comp. and then i use windows defragmentor to move stuff around to also speed up my comp. good luck to you
